Splitwise alternative: six apps checked on October 15, 2026, and when you need none
The best Splitwise alternative depends on the case: Tricount for a trip with friends, Splid for a place with bad signal, Settle Up when a friend will not install anything. Two people who only split a monthly bill need no app at all, and our calculator does that without an account.

In short
Splitwise lets a free user add 4 expenses a day (Splitwise help). Its own pages print no Pro price. Tricount says free, no ads, no limits on its site, and Splid and Spliit work without sign-up.
- Trip with friends: Tricount or Splid.
- A flat with rent and groceries: Tricount, or Spliit in a browser.
- One restaurant bill: Tab.
- Two people who share a home: a calculator once a month, or Honeydue to see bank accounts together.
Splitwise free limit and Splitwise Pro price, as Splitwise prints them
The Splitwise help center says “free users can add up to 4 expenses each day” (Splitwise help). A second article says Pro removes the limit at once, and that a free user can wait for the reset or ask a friend to enter the expense (Splitwise help).
Neither page names ads or a timed wait. Reviewers on the App Store listing do (App Store).
- October 9, 2026: Splitwise “makes you wait 10 seconds while adding expenses in groups per expense added”.
- The daily number reviewers report runs from 3 to 5, so the stated 4 is the one to plan on.
Splitwise Pro price is not on splitwise.com/pro, in its help center or in its terms, which say only that the price “may vary” (terms). The US App Store listing on October 15 shows ten Splitwise Pro entries from $2.99 to $39.99, without saying which is monthly and which is yearly.
Two reviewers quote higher figures, “8$ a month” and “$60 per year” (App Store). We could not confirm either, so treat the price as unstated until your own store shows it.
Splitwise for couples: the Duo plan
The help center describes Pro Duo as a subscription “billed once annually” that “can be used by two people” (Splitwise help). Its price is not printed there either.

Which Splitwise alternative fits a trip, a flat or a couple
Free Splitwise alternative for a trip with friends
Tricount is the shortest answer: free and unlimited by its own account, and its listing names trips and rent. Splid is the pick when the trip is somewhere with weak signal, because it keeps an offline group and syncs when you want it to.
One catch with Splid: a reviewer on October 8 says the free version allows one group, and its listing also shows a 2 Groups purchase at $2.99. Settle Up covers the friend who refuses an install, since it shares a group link that opens in a browser.
Roommates and rent
Tricount works here too. Spliit adds recurring expenses, which suits rent that repeats monthly, and splits by percentage, shares or amount; its recurring feature is labeled Beta on its own page.
No app decides what is fair. If the rooms are different sizes, settle the rule first with the rent split calculator, which shows three rules side by side, then enter the result in whichever app you chose.
Two people who live together
An app like Splitwise built for groups is more than a couple needs. Honeydue is the exception on this list that is made for two, but it links bank accounts and, by its listing, supports US banks. Both of you then see everything it syncs, which is a bigger step than splitting costs.
A couple that needs one monthly split does not need an app
Our shared expenses calculator does one job. You list the costs you share in a month, mark who actually pays each line, and enter both take-home incomes.
- It divides the total half and half, by income, or by shares you set.
- It names the single payment that settles the month.
- It works in your browser, needs no account, and nothing you type is sent anywhere or saved.
That also marks its limit. It keeps no history and no running tally during the month, so for a trip with a dozen small payments use Tricount or Splid instead. If the shared cost is rent, start with the rent split calculator and bring the number into the monthly table.
Splitting money is half of living together. Alpacto is our own app, and it does not split bills; it holds the agreement about who does what, what counts as done and by when, signed by both of you. See also budget apps for couples.
One complaint per app, from the latest App Store reviews
The most recent low-rated review for each app, from its public review feed, with the review date.
- Splitwise, October 1, 2026: “capping the amount of expenses to 5 with the free version is even more idiotic”.
- Tricount, September 21, 2026: after a second trip, “the math was not mathing”.
- Splid, October 8, 2026: “YOU CAN ONLY HAVE ONE GROUP ON THE FREE VERSION”. It was a 4-star review; none of the latest 50 was rated 3 or lower.
- Settle Up, July 5, 2026: “Your web interface is not good and I don’t want another app crowding my device.”
- Spliit, March 15, 2025: the date “saves incorrectly (it’s a day ahead)”. It is the only written review of its iPhone app.
- Tab, September 28, 2026: a 25-person bill, and “everything deleted off of it within a week or so”.
- Honeydue, August 6, 2026: “Quit syncing after a month or so of use.”
Test any app with five real expenses before you hand it a whole trip.
