A couples workout challenge for four weeks, with one scoreboard and a prize you set first

A couple at a kitchen island circling Ana as the winner on a filled-in couples workout challenge sheet

This couples workout challenge fits on one page: four weeks, a row for each of you and a box for every day. Before you start, you agree how many minutes count as a workout and write down the prize. After 28 days, whoever has more counted workouts wins.

What is on the sheet

Names and the minimum

The scoreboard

Week 1 to Week 4, a row for each partner, Mon to Sun, and a Workouts box at the end of every row.

Totals and winner

“Partner 1 total workouts”, “Partner 2 total workouts” and “Winner”.

The prize

“What the winner gets”, “What the other person does” and “If it’s a tie, we both”.

Why the sheet counts workouts, not pounds or reps

Most plans in the search results pick a winner by strength, weight or points. Coach magazine’s list for gym buddies leans on timed tests, such as rowing 1,000 m in three minutes. Andie Thueson’s couples challenge scores daily points, and “You can also lose points for some less-than-stellar health choices.”

In a couple exercise challenge like that, the fitter partner starts ahead. This sheet counts one thing: a day on which you moved for at least the minutes you agreed on. The CDC gives the reason: “Everyone’s fitness level is different.”

Kenji’s 60-minute Saturday in week 2 scores the same as a 20-minute day, and his 10 and 15 score nothing. That keeps a partner workout challenge fair: whoever trains less often catches up by showing up more, whatever the pace.

How to run a couples fitness challenge in four weeks

  1. Pick a Monday to start. The example starts on Mon, Sept 28, 2026 and ends on Sunday, Oct 25.
  2. Agree on the minimum. The CDC’s weekly target for adults is 150 minutes of moderate activity, which “could be 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.” Starting lower, like the example’s 20, still counts: “Some physical activity is better than none.”
  3. Agree on what counts. Moderate means you can talk but not sing. Fill in the workout list together, such as Run in the park or Bike to the lake and back.
  4. Write the prize and the tie line before day one.
  5. Put the sheet where you both pass it. Each of you writes your own minutes; a blank box is a rest day.
  6. On Sunday, fill in Workouts with the boxes that reached the minimum. After week 4, add up the totals and write the winner.

If either of you has a chronic condition, the CDC suggests telling your doctor before you step up your activity.

A prize that is small, written first, with a line for a tie

In the example, the winner “Picks every Friday movie in November”, and November 2026 has four Fridays. The other person “Makes Sunday pancakes four weeks in a row”. A tie means they both “go out for tacos, and the next round starts Monday”.

The sheet has no line for money, weight or calories, and never prints the word loser. Andie Thueson suggests a chore as the stake: “make the loser fold the laundry for the next month!” A chore works here too, on the second prize line, agreed while nobody knows who will be doing it.

Questions people ask

Is it good for couples to work out together?

There is some evidence for it. In a 1995 study by Wallace and colleagues of an Indiana University fitness program, among the 16 married couples who joined together, 6.3% of the partners dropped out within 12 months. Among the 30 married people who joined without their spouse, 43% dropped out; the sample was small and the study looked back at records.

What are some fun couple challenges?

Our couple challenges page lists 30, sorted by what they train. For fitness challenge ideas for couples on this sheet, fill in the four workout lines with activities you both like.

Can this be a weight loss challenge for couples?

Not as printed: the sheet has no line for weight, calories or body measurements. It scores workouts, which each of you controls every day; even Andie Thueson’s challenge is “not tied to weight loss on a scale”.

Is there a couples fitness challenge point system?

One point per counted workout, and no minus points. A box counts if it reaches the minutes written at the top; shorter sessions stay on the sheet but score nothing.

Is it a 30 day workout challenge for couples?

Close: it runs 28 days, four weeks from a Monday, so each week is a fresh round with its own count. To keep going, start a new sheet the next Monday, as the tie line in the example does.

Is the printable free, and is there an A4 version?

Yes to both: free with no email, in US Letter and A4. The fillable PDF has 78 fields, so you can type everything in before printing.

Four weeks of workouts, as a bet

In Alpacto the same contest can be a bet for the two of you: two sides, clear stakes, and an outcome you both call. Each partner’s workouts can run as a routine with visible check-ins and a streak, on both phones. Coins stay inside Alpacto and are never money.
