Household chores list: 64 chores sorted by how often they need doing

A household chores list printable on the fridge next to the filled-in chore chart

A household chores list for any home, sorted from daily jobs to monthly ones, including the rows people forget: bills, appointments, the shared calendar. The same 64 chores print on two pages with a tick box each, so you can cross out what does not apply before anyone argues about the rest.

In short

Daily chores keep the house usable: dishes, counters, dinner, pets. Weekly chores keep it clean: bathroom, floors, sheets, groceries. Monthly chores, like the oven or the bills, are the ones that slip for a year.

Across everyone aged 15 and over in the US, household activities average 1.99 hours a day (BLS, ATUS 2025, Table 1). Cross out the rows that do not apply, then give each remaining row a frequency, an owner and one line for what “done” means.

The household chores list, sorted by how often

Treat each frequency as a target for an ordinary week: a house with a dog needs the floors more often. The numbers match the printable. This house chores list also covers money and paperwork, the jobs nobody sees until a bill is late.

Numbers are the row numbers on the printable.
For three of these rows, the timing is not a matter of taste.

Three chores with a real rule behind the timing

Check food dates, twice a week. The USDA says leftovers keep 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator, so a Monday and Thursday check catches them in time. Source: USDA FSIS, Leftovers and Food Safety

Dry laundry, lint filter every cycle. The U.S. Fire Administration advises cleaning the lint filter before and after each cycle, because a dirty filter raises the risk of a dryer fire. Source: USFA, Clothes Dryer Fire Safety

Test smoke alarms, monthly. It is not on the printable, so write it into a blank row: USFA advises a monthly test and new batteries at least once a year. Source: USFA, Smoke Alarms

Next: how much time the whole list asks for.

What “done” means, one line per chore

Wash dishes · daily
Sink empty, dishwasher running or rack dry, counters wiped
Check food dates · twice a week
Leftovers older than four days are out
Dry laundry · each load
Lint filter cleaned, clothes out of the dryer the same day
Clean toilet · weekly
Bowl, seat, base and the floor around it; brush rinsed
Change bed sheets · weekly
Fresh set on, used set in the wash, not on the floor
Pay agreed bills · monthly
Paid, marked on the shared calendar, one named owner
Suggested standards. Write your own, so everyone reads the same sentence.

How long household chores take: about two hours a day

The 2025 American Time Use Survey puts household activities at 1.99 hours a day across everyone aged 15 and over, and food preparation with cleanup is the largest part. Source: BLS, ATUS 2025, Table 1

Cooking and cleanup lean to weekdays (66 % against 63 %), housework to weekends (40 % against 35 %). So keep the daily rows for weekday evenings and give the list of weekly household chores one weekend slot. Source: BLS, ATUS 2025 news release

Household management, the survey’s category for paperwork and planning, averages 0.17 hours a day. It is the household duties list nobody writes down, which is why rows 54 to 64 exist. To split the work by minutes, use the chore split calculator.

Cross out, then give every row an owner

A complete list can backfire. One commenter wrote that a list like this:

“creates pressure to do jobs that aren’t that high priority or don’t need doing for any other reason than they are on a list.”r/homemaking · a thread about an overwhelming cleaning routine

So use the printable as a household task list to choose from. Cross out the rows your home does not have, like the litter box, then move each remaining row to the frequency that fits your week. A job that should change hands every week fits a printable chore wheel.

Then give every row one owner:

“I always found splitting up the chores by area is much better than trying to 50/50 each individual task.”r/homemaking · “Cleaning routine for a couple”

Copy the rows you kept onto the blank chart: area, what “done” means, the day, whose name is on it. Your home chore list is now a plan everyone reads the same way. When one person should own a whole area, use the responsibility chart for adults.

Household chore list printable: Letter and A4

Both pages in one PDF, a tick box on every row. Free, no email, sorted by frequency above.

Choose US Letter in the United States and Canada, A4 elsewhere. Print portrait, at actual size or 100 %, one page per sheet, and test one page first. The same pages are also pages 5 and 6 of the chore chart set. To reuse the sheet, slide it into a plastic sleeve and tick with a whiteboard marker.

Questions people ask

How many chores should you do a day?

There is no fixed number; this list has thirteen daily rows, most of them a few minutes each. Household activities average 1.99 hours a day across everyone aged 15 and over (BLS, ATUS 2025, Table 1), so put the long jobs on one weekly slot.

What are 10 common household chores?

Dishes, counters, dinner, trash, laundry, vacuuming, the toilet, bed sheets, groceries and the bills. All ten are on the printable, as rows 1, 3, 15, 38, 26, 33, 18, 31, 13 and 55.

How should household chores be divided?

By minutes and whole areas: one owner per area, one line for “done”, totals checked in the chore split calculator.

Is there a list of 100 chores to do around the house?

This one has 64, because it keeps only chores that come back on a schedule (see the list). Seasonal jobs such as clearing gutters go into blank rows, so the domestic chores list fits your home.

Can I get the household chores list by room?

Yes, the printable is grouped by room. Rows 1–16 are the kitchen, 17–24 the bathroom, 25–32 laundry, 33–48 floors, 49–53 pets and 54–64 money and admin.

Is there an app for a shared chore list?

Yes. In Alpacto a row becomes a pact: the chore, what counts as done, and what it is worth in coins, on iPhone and Android.
