Roommate chore chart: a printable rotation for 2 to 4 people

A blank roommate chore chart printable held to the fridge with magnets

In short

Give each person one shared area for a week, then move everyone one area along. The person who gets that area next week signs Checked by, because a half-done bathroom lands on them first.

Personal mess stays off the sheet. Agree on one sentence of what “done” means before week one.

Roommate chore chart generator: type your names and areas, print a month

Write 2 to 4 names and the shared areas, one per line. The table shows who has which area in each of four weeks, moving everyone one area along. Nothing you type leaves this page.

Each download holds all three designs. To type on a computer, use the fillable Letter or A4 PDF. Filled-in examples: Letter or A4.

What is on the sheet, and why

  • Names A to D. The grid uses letters, so it works for two, three or four people.
  • Two weeks with start dates. One page covers a handover.
  • Area rows. A whole area per person, because a list of small tasks gets cherry-picked.
  • Checked by and Our shared standard. A second name on every area, and the sentence it is checked against.

The filled-in example hides a rule: Alex cleans the kitchen in week one and Sam checks it, because Sam takes the kitchen next. Whoever inherits an area has the best reason to look closely, so nobody plays house inspector.

Filled-in example: Alex, Sam, Jordan and Casey rotate kitchen, bathroom, floors and trash

How to rotate areas for 2, 3 or 4 roommates

Use as many areas as people and move everyone along one area on the same weekday. One roommate explained why rotating beats choosing favorites:

“This way, the worst room to clean (the bathroom) is a heavy weight that can be split between all roommates.”r/badroommates · “Chore chart”

Two weeks on one page: when week one is done, everyone moves one row along.

Chore chart for 4 roommates

  • Week 1: A kitchen, B bathroom, C floors, D trash
  • Week 2: everyone moves one row down
  • The cycle repeats every four weeks

Chore chart for 3 roommates

  • Rows: kitchen, bathroom, floors with trash
  • Column D and the fourth row stay empty
  • The cycle repeats every three weeks

Two roommates

  • Week 1: A kitchen with trash, B bathroom with floors
  • Week 2: swap the pairs
  • The whole cycle fits on one sheet

Chore list for roommates: shared areas on, your own mess off

A chart breaks fastest when your row fills with someone else’s plates. One reply put it plainly:

“The chore chart should be only for things that all of you contribute to. Sweeping the floors, taking out the garbage, wiping the counters, dusting, etc… Things like dishes should be “clean up after yourself”.”r/roommates · “Chore chart issue”

Roommate chore chart ideas by area

Four areas fill the four rows; each “Done means” line is a draft for your shared standard.

Kitchen

  • Wipe counters and stovetop
  • Clear out the shared fridge
  • Done means: fridge at 40 °F or below, nothing past its date (FDA)

Bathroom

  • Toilet, sink and shower
  • Restock toilet paper
  • Done means: the next person uses it without wiping anything first

Floors

  • Vacuum shared rooms
  • Mop kitchen and bathroom
  • Done means: no personal things left in shared rooms

Trash

  • Trash and recycling out on pickup day
  • Replace bin bags
  • Done means: empty bins, spare bags

Stays off the chart: anything that is yours alone, from your plates to your laundry.

When a roommate skips a turn

One group made whoever forgot do the chore the next day and gave the person on duty a pass. In their words:

“…that just resulted in nobody ever doing chores lol.”r/roommates · “Roommate chore punishment ideas”

Skipping cost nothing. These rules keep the cost with the skipper:

  • The area stays yours until it meets the standard, even after handover day.
  • Checked by gets a signature only when the area matches the standard line.
  • Swaps are fine if both initials go on the sheet before the week starts.
  • Two misses in a row on one area: rebuild the sheet together, since the area or the standard is off.

Guests, groceries and bills go into a separate roommate agreement.

How to print and reuse the chart

  • US Letter in the United States and Canada, A4 elsewhere.
  • Portrait, actual size or 100 %, one page first as a test.
  • Reuse it in a plastic sleeve with a whiteboard marker, initials in the circles.

Compare how long each area takes with the chore split calculator; rent has its own rent split calculator.

Questions people ask

How should roommates split chores?

By shared area: one area per person per week, rotating weekly, checked against a written standard.

What is a good schedule for cleaning with housemates?

A weekly roommate chore schedule with daily clean-as-you-go and one fixed handover day.

What are 10 common household chores?

Dishes, counters, fridge, toilet, shower, vacuuming, mopping, trash, recycling and restocking supplies. The household chores list goes room by room.

What is the most disliked chore?

In the thread quoted above, the bathroom, so the chart rotates it instead of letting one person keep it.

Is there an Excel or Google Sheets version?

Not yet. You can type into every box of the fillable PDF and tick its circles.

Does it work for five or more roommates?

Yes, if two names share one column and that pair splits the area.

Is a chore wheel for roommates better than a chart?

Both hold the same rotation, but the chart keeps dates and signatures. The chore wheel uses the same areas.
