Living together agreement for couples: two pages, eight sections

Living together agreement for couples, both pages held on a fridge door by magnets in a bright kitchen

This living together agreement is two printable pages that a couple fills in before moving in or in the first weeks after. It covers whose name the home is in, how the rent splits, who cleans the bathroom, how long guests stay, and a calm plan for splitting up. Page 2 says plainly that it is not a legal document; where the law comes in is explained below.

What the agreement covers

Page 1 holds everything with a price tag, page 2 the time, the guests and the harder talks. As an agreement for couples living together, it has a section a roommate agreement leaves out: time together and apart.

The home and money

Whose name the home is in and the spaces each of you keeps. A money table with five printed rows, from rent to household supplies, plus a blank sixth: total, split, who pays.

Purchases and chores

The amount above which you check with each other before spending. Four blank chore rows with who and how often.

Time apart and guests

Evenings for the two of you and the time each of you spends alone. Notice for guests, and the longest visit before both of you must say yes.

Disagreements and splitting up

Three printed steps for an argument, starting with “We bring it up the same day, calmly.” Then a monthly check-in and five lines for a breakup.

Questions to ask your partner before moving in, and where the answers go

None of the five question lists we read from this search on September 24, 2026 had a place to write the answers. Here each of the things to ask your partner before moving in gets a line on a sheet you both sign.

QuestionWhere the answer goes
Whose name goes on the lease or the deed?1 · The home is in the name of
Will it be our place, or one person’s place the other lives in?1 · Spaces each of us keeps as our own
Do we split the rent 50/50 or by income?2 · How we split it
When do we settle up each month?2 · We settle up on
How much can either of us spend without asking?3 · We check with each other before spending more than
Who cooks, cleans the bathroom and does the laundry?4 · Chore, Who, How often
Which evenings are just for the two of us?5 · Evenings we keep for the two of us
How much time alone does each of us need?5 · Time on our own each week
Who gets up first, and how quiet do mornings need to be?5 · Sleep and wake-up times we plan around
How much notice before a friend stays over?6 · Let each other know about guests at least
How long can a parent stay?6 · Visits longer than this need a yes from both of us
Whose family gets which holiday?6 · How we split the holidays
How do we argue, and when do we check in?7 · Our monthly check-in
If we break up, who stays and how long does the other have?8 · Who stays in the home; Time the other person has to move out
Who keeps what we bought together, and the pets?8 · Things we bought together; Pets live with

Two rows come from a Reddit thread on talks people wished they had held first. The poster, whose partner was moving in with her, singled out whether it is “our place” or “my place that he lives in”, and one reply began: “Sleep habits. You won’t always go to bed at the same time”.

Why money and chores go on page one

In a YouGov poll in early 2026, unmarried partners who live together were more likely than married ones to say they sometimes argue about each topic in the chart. Among couples in serious relationships who live apart, only 9% said so about money and 9% about chores.

Money is often why people move in at all. In a 2019 Pew Research Center survey, 38% of adults living with an unmarried partner said a major reason was that moving in made sense financially.

If we split up: five lines written while nobody needs them

Section 8 opens with a printed sentence: “We hope we never need this part. Writing it now keeps things fair later.” Five lines follow, from who stays to when shared accounts close.

In the example, Aisha stays because the home is in her name, and Daniel has 60 days to move out. For things bought together, one keeps the item and pays the other half. The sheet is reviewed three months after the September 1 move-in.

Questions people ask

Can I make my own cohabitation agreement?

Yes. For the legal part, Nolo says most unmarried couples with relatively simple finances can write their own, and Washington’s legal aid site offers a free sample form. For a home you buy together, Nolo suggests a separate agreement.

How enforceable is a cohabitation agreement?

It depends on your state and on what it covers. Per Nolo, courts generally enforce valid terms about property and payments, not chores. This sheet is meant for the two of you only.

Is this a cohabitation agreement template?

It covers the daily ground of a cohabitation agreement template, from the rent to a breakup, with no legal force. For a version with legal weight, start from the legal aid guide or the Nolo article linked above.

Is there an A4 version, and can I type into it?

Yes. Every design comes in US Letter and A4, each with a fillable PDF of 55 fields; signatures are left for a pen.

The same agreement, as pacts

In Alpacto a line of this sheet can become a pact that lives on both phones. The bathroom every Saturday fits a routine with visible check-ins; this month’s settle-up fits a task one of you marks complete and the other confirms. The pact holds the reminder.

Everything described here is printed on the sheet, and the examples come from its filled-in version.
