This relationship contract is two pages you fill in together: chores, shared money, time together and apart, how you argue, and when you read it again. It names Partner 1 and Partner 2 with no roles assigned, and it is not a legal document.

In short
Print both pages and fill in one section at a time. Section one splits the housework into two columns; section two sets what each of you can spend without asking.
Section five has four rules for arguments to check, and section six settles the thermostat. Sign, write down the day you will read it again, and keep it where you both see it.

Page one. Two columns for what each partner takes care of, plus who covers when one of you is sick or swamped. Then shared costs, a spending limit, purchases you decide together, a savings goal and a monthly money talk.
Time together and apart
Weekly time together, when phones go away and how often date night happens. On page two: friends and hobbies, notice before making plans, and alone time.

A relationship contract that starts with the dishes and the money
Writer Mandy Len Catron, who keeps one with her partner, told NPR: “Every relationship is contractual, we’re just making the terms more explicit.” Two well-known templates leave part of the everyday out.
The eforms template labels the two people Boyfriend and Girlfriend, asks for mailing addresses and legal liability, and has no line about housework. The couples contract Logan Ury made with the Romp app covers rituals and fights, with no section on money or chores.
This sheet opens with both. In the example, Nia and Ethan split shared costs 55/45, and each can spend up to $150 without asking. To pick a split, our shared expenses calculator divides monthly bills half and half, by income, or by shares you set.

A relationship agreement for the day you argue
Section five prints four rules to check: stay on topic, a 20-minute break either of you can ask for, no arguing over text, none in front of friends or family.
The 20 minutes follow John Gottman: his institute says a break should last “at least twenty minutes, since it will take that much time for your bodies to physiologically calm down.” The same article warns: “Anything more than a day can begin to feed negative sentiment.” So the sheet names who comes back first: “The one who asked restarts the talk.”
Two lines are yours: a word that means you need a break, and how you make up. Ury’s template also asks for a time-out word. In the example the word is pineapple, and making up is a walk around the block, then tacos.
Page two gets signed last, after the rules for arguing are checked.
The funny relationship contract section: small print we take seriously
Section six has five lines: the movie, the last bite of dessert, the thermostat, sides of the bed and shows you only watch together.
Small arguments repeat; an answer written once ends the rerun. The example settles dessert with whoever didn’t cook and the thermostat with 70°F, with a blanket for Nia.

Pick the review date before you sign
Section seven asks for the day you read it again and how you celebrate keeping it. NPR reports that Catron and her partner “started with a six-month contract” and “now revisit it once a year.”
The example signs on September 12, 2026 and reads it again on March 12, 2027, with pancakes at their diner. At the review, cross out what no longer fits and print a fresh copy.

What should a relationship contract include?
The everyday terms you would otherwise guess at: chores, shared costs, time together and apart, and how you argue, plus a review date and both signatures. Topics this sheet leaves out, such as children, can go on a page stapled behind it.
Are girlfriend contracts legal?
Not as a contract about the relationship itself. Attorney Jennifer Brandt writes on Martindale-Avvo that relationship agreements defining each partner’s role “are not legally enforceable,” unlike prenuptial agreements that meet state requirements. Our sheet prints the same at the bottom: not a legal document.
What is a contract for a boyfriend?
A boyfriend contract is an agreement written with one partner in mind, and a girlfriend contract is the same from the other side. The eforms template in this search labels the two people Boyfriend and Girlfriend; this one uses Partner 1 and Partner 2, so it fits any couple.
How do I write a relationship agreement?
