What is on the sheet
Our shared goals
Three numbered rows: Our goal, First step, Done by, Check on.
Partner 1’s goals, Partner 2’s goals
Two rows each: Goal, First step, Check on. Under each table: How you can help me.
We check in on our goals
Your check-in rhythm, what you do when a shared goal is reached, then Signature and Date for both.
How to fill in the couples goal setting worksheet
- Write both names and the year. No year is printed, so the sheet works for any year.
- Agree on three shared goals. Each of you writes two personal goals alone.
- Give every goal a first step you can take this week, and a Check on date before its Done by date.
- Under your own goals, write one thing the other person can do to help.
- Fill in the last two lines and both signatures. The sheet goes on the fridge.
| Our goal | First step | Done by | Check on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save $6,000 for our Portugal trip in September | Set up a $750 auto-transfer on the 1st | Aug 31 | Apr 4 |
| Cook dinner at home 5 nights a week | Plan Sunday menus together | Mar 31 | Feb 7 |
| Pay off the car loan ($4,800 left) | Put $400 toward it every month | Dec 31 | Jul 4 |
The dates can be checked. Eight transfers of $750 make $6,000 by August 31, so on April 4 there should be $3,000 in the account. Twelve payments of $400 clear the loan; on July 4 it should be down to $2,400.
The sheet’s example; Hannah Kim and Rafael Moreno are invented. Every Check on date is the first Sunday of a month.

New year goals for couples: write what you will do
A Swedish study followed 1,066 people’s New Year’s resolutions for a year. Goals phrased as something to start or do more of held up better than goals to stop or avoid something: 58.9% against 47.1% of people rated themselves successful.
Oscarsson et al., PLOS ONE, 2020. Success was self-rated.
So the Our goal line reads Cook dinner at home 5 nights a week, not stop ordering takeout. The First step column keeps a big goal small enough to start. The Gottman Institute: “By chunking them down into small actionable steps, it’s easier to stay consistent with them.”

Every goal gets a first step.
How you can help me, and the monthly check-in
A personal goal still needs the other person. In the same study, people who named one person to support them and reported every month rated their success at 62.3% on average, against 55.9% for the group without that support.
On the sheet that person is the one across the table. Hannah writes Keep Tue and Thu evenings quiet for her certificate; Rafael writes Cheer at my last swim lesson.
At each check-in, read the Check on column. A goal whose first step happened gets a next step; a goal whose first step did not happen gets a smaller one. Hannah and Rafael check in on the first Sunday of every month, over pancakes.

The check-in line, agreed on day one.
A goal and habit tracker for the same year
The 2027 Habit Tracker for Two holds three habits you both keep all year. Once a month each of you writes how many days you kept each one; the days in each month are already printed. Next to every habit, a Done means line settles what counts.
| Month | Days | Walk after dinner | No phones at dinner | Lights out by 11 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Done means | 15 minutes or more | Phones in the basket | Weekends too | |
| January | 31 | 24 / 21 | 28 / 27 | 19 / 23 |
| February | 28 | 22 / 20 | 25 / 26 | 18 / 21 |
| March | 31 | 26 / 25 | 29 / 28 | 22 / 24 |
The sheet’s example, Mei Lin / Omar; both are invented. They check in on the last day of the month, after dinner.
Two rewards give the year a midpoint: a halfway reward after June and an end-of-year reward. The sheet’s own rule: “Zero is just a number, not a verdict.” For a grid with a box for every day, use the daily habit tracker sheet, or the 30 day habit tracker for two for a single month.

Questions people ask
What are some good couple goals for the new year?
Goals you can both act on this week. The Gottman Institute’s ideas include screen-free meals and a weekly date. The example sheet has a trip fund, dinners at home and a car loan to pay off; no categories are printed, so you choose.
Is there a fillable PDF of the worksheet?
Yes. Each design comes as a fillable PDF with 33 fields; you type in everything except the two signatures, then print and sign.
Should we fill in the relationship goals worksheet together or separately?
Both. Write your two personal goals and your How you can help me line alone, then agree on the three shared goals, the check-in and the celebration together.

Turn a shared goal into a challenge
In Alpacto a shared goal can be a challenge pact: a goal with a finish line, a period you can see and a reward at the end. The monthly check-in fits a routine, and a first step fits a task one of you marks complete and the other confirms. Coins stay inside the app and are never money; accounts start at age 13.
